Fermentation of mannitol in the presence of neutral red results in a characteristic "bull's-eye" colony, colorless with red center. Selectivity of this medium is obtained by means of crystal violet, sodium desoxycholate and the antimicrobial agents, cefsulodin, Irgasan® (triclosan) and novobiocin.
