Staphylococcus epidermidis
colonies on Tryptic Soy Agar

S. epidermidis forms white, raised, cohesive colonies approximately 1–2 millimeter in diameter after overnight incubation on Tryptic Soy Agar. It is nonhemolytic on blood agar. It is a catalase-positive, coagulase-negative, facultative anaerobe that can grow by aerobic respiration or by fermentation. Some strains may not ferment.

Microscopy:
Gram-positive cocci, nonmotile, tend to be arranged in grape-like clusters.
