Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus
appearance on agar

Colonies of Streptococcus equi are surrounded by a wide zone of beta-hemolysis. Mucous colonies, encapsulated strain. Cultivation 48 hours in an aerobic atmosphere, 37°C.

In general, Lancefield group C streptococci (GCS) have cell walls consisting of group-specific carbohydrate and mucopeptide polymer. The group-specific antigens of GCS are polysaccharides that are made up of hexoamine and rhamnose. Unlike group A streptococci (GAS), GCS carbohydrate has a terminal antigenic determinant of N-acetyl-galactosamine.
