Streptococcus agalactiae is a spherical, Gram-positive bacterium that is the cause of group B streptococcal infections. S. agalactiae displays streptococcal group B antigen on its cell wall. S. agalactiae typically produces zones of beta-hemolysis when cultured on blood agar plates, and are therefore also called Group B (beta-hemolytic) Streptococcus.
