y.enterocolitica, urease test, mannitol fermentation

Yersinia enterocolitica on Endo agar with biochemical slope. Cultivation 24 hours, 37°C.

Typical biochemical properties of Y.enterocolitica:

In the picture you can see:
  • small lactose negative colonies of Y.enterocolitica on Endo agar after 24h cultivation. Compare with K.pneumoniae
  • D-mannitol fermentation (red coloured agar and colonies around the mannitol tablet)
  • sucrose fermentation (colour change around the sucrose tablet is not visible; this is only a prescreening and it is necessary to test all biochemical properties in tubes or with a commercia kit)
  • acid from glucose without gas
  • urea positive (bluish color of the biochemical slope; about 75% positive)
  • hydrogen sulfide negative (compare with Salmonella enterica)
